Masterplan, St David’s Marist Inanda School

Greenspace Studio has had the pleasure of working with St David’s Marist Inanda School over a number of years and projects. Located in the heart of the urban district of Sandton, the school exists in a context that is constantly evolving and transforming. As buildings get taller and traffic congestion increases, careful planning is required to contend with challenges related to accessibility, elevated noise levels and shadows cast by surrounding buildings, while simultaneously preserving the community-based, pastoral identity of the school.

The objective of the masterplan was to complete a global yet intricate view of the school’s existing facilities and current functionality, as well as capture the future vision of the school. A clear picture of the various precincts was established, including elements such as the circulation of people, edge conditions and water, waste and electrical systems. This allowed for the creation of a priority list for future planning, efficient problem solving and a basis from which to work in adapting to a rapidly changing environment. Underpinning Greenspace Studio’s approach was a desire to prioritise learning spaces that are contemporary, inclusive, adaptable and technologically advanced, while also reflecting the culture and heritage of the school.
